Written in Sand

Eugenie Mora

A dust cloud snaked along the silver ribbon of the road in the wake of the caravan. Loose chunks of macadam pinged against the sides of the lead car, ricocheting into tufts of brambles.

The driver didn’t ease off the gas as he neared the canyon. His confidence in the re-purposed sedan was heartwarming.

That, Chandan reasoned, or the merc was used to this stretch.

Chandan had a fair idea which raiders used which route, but there were always new gangs picking up the trade while others went out of business—mostly muscled out by the competition or chewed up by critters in the night.

Gut instinct was his only gauge, and this time it was telling him to strike.

Jagged rocks digging into his belly, he settled his elbow into the ragged surface of the boulder and used the grit of stone to balance the rifle. Thirty seconds until the caravan passed out of range.

Plenty of time.

He spat out the mint leaf and cocked his head. The sight line to the lead vehicle was clear. The fading sun was on his side.

He aimed for the driver’s side front wheel, relaxed his shoulders, and gently squeezed the trigger.

The rifle kicked back like a bronco, recoil pad jamming into his collarbone. Fifty feet below in the ravine, the lead vehicle zigzagged along the road, stirring up a rust-yellow storm.

Its driver slammed the brakes with a squeal of tires. The two vans behind it had to swerve to avoid collision. The Jeep that brought up the rear took to off-roading and skirted the damage site to pull up in front.

Two men climbed out. One wore a modified carbine strapped to his back—a welcome addition to Chandan’s collection. The other was empty-handed and gesticulating.

Steadying the rifle, Chandan aimed for the lead car’s driver and fired again. He had to be quick about it now. The rest of them scrabbling like a startled herd.

A burst of gunfire erupted in the silent gorge.

Chandan ducked before a ricochet struck him down. The guy with the carbine. Great. Deciding who to take out first was always a challenge. Sometimes there was no right call.

Another volley struck the boulder behind him, sprinkling dust onto his head. By now the other two jokers would be out of the van, too. The odds were not in Chandan’s favor.

He dug into his pocket for his very last flash bomb. It whirred when he flipped the countdown switch, battery charge readying detonation. It only had one good burst in it, but if the mercs were trying to pick out his position the only thing to do was turn their scrutiny against them.

He lobbed the bomb over his head in a clean arc.
